Ridgewood Police Arrest North Korean National for DUI, Eluding Police

After police tried to pull the car over for speeding, the driver finally stopped and allegedly switched places with the passenger.

A North Korean national was arrested by Ridgewood Police for allegedly driving while under the influence and eluding police.

Ridgewood Police attempted to stop a vehicle at 4 a.m. on Dec. 17 for speeding on Route 17 but the vehicle failed to stop, according to Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward. But, when the vehicle did finally stop, police “observed the driver and passenger switch places in the vehicle.”

After an investigation, the driver, 25-year-old An Jae Hyoung from North Korea, was charged with driving under the influence, failure to stop for an emergency vehicle, careless driving and eluding.

The owner of the vehicle, Dahae Noh, 30, of Edgewater, who was a passenger in the car, was also charged with obstruction and allowing a drunk driver to operate a motor vehicle.

Both were released pending a January court date.
