Ridgewood Woman Scammed Out Of $6,900: Police

The woman was told she won $200K and needed to wire money to collect the winnings and for taxes, police said.

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — A resident reported Saturday she was a victim of a "lottery" scam, police announced.

The woman was told she had won $200,000, but she needed to wire someone $2,200 to collect it, police said.

The woman was then told that she needed to wire another $4,700 for taxes, police said.

Police said the woman wired the $6,900 to the scammer.

She was told that her identity was compromised and that she needed to purchase a prepaid GameStop card for $500 and send the card information to the scammer, police said.

The woman purchased the card, but did not provide the information to the scammer, police said.

Village police has received reports from residents who were the victims of various scams. Many scammers present themselves as government officials or from public utilities like PSE&G.

Ridgewood police said anyone who receives suspicious phone calls should call them at 201-652-3900.
