Saturday: Children's Book Author at Bookends

Margaret Cardillo will be at Bookends at 1 p.m.

1) The Wall Street Journal takes a really interesting look at the infamous Triangle Building Fire of 1911, which will be commemorated for its 100-year anniversary on March 25. One-hundred forty six people died in the fire, including seventeen men working for Triangle. What does this have to do with Ridgewood, you ask?

Among the men who passed away was Ridgewood resident Elliot Steinberg's grandfather, Kalman Donick, reportedly a shop foreman at the warehouse. Until 1963, Steinberg had thought that Kalman's brother Harry, was his grandfather. On the day Harry passed in 1963, Steinberg's mother told him his actual grandfather was Kalman. The article notes Harry had married Kalman's widow after the fire.

2) A reminder – the school-board owned fields near the brook this weekend due to flooding. No word if the boys varsity baseball team will still play Ridgefield HS at home.
