School In Glen Rock One Of Only 11 In NJ To Get Federal 'Blue Ribbon' Status
An elementary school in Glen Rock was one of only 11 in New Jersey to get federal "Blue Ribbon" status for 2024.
BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Schools across the country that provide an excellent education, all while "closing the achievement gaps" among disadvantaged students, are given "Blue Ribbon" status by the federal government each year.
This year, only 11 individual schools in New Jersey, out of around 2,500 in the Garden State, were awarded the distinction. The schools were announced on Monday afternoon, Sept. 23.
Among them, two were chosen from Bergen County, including Alexander Hamilton Elementary School in Glen Rock.

The U.S. Department of Education said Monday, "This recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups on assessments. These schools demonstrate what is possible to make an enduring, positive difference in students’ lives."
356 schools were chosen this year.

"The 2024 cohort are in 45 States, the District of Columbia, and Department of Defense Education Activity schools in England, Germany, and at West Point," the Department of Education said. "They represent (316) public and (40) non-public schools. Of the 356 schools, (14) schools were recognized in both the Exemplary High Performing and Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools categories."
Alexander Hamilton Elementary School said that it "stands out for its community-driven and inclusive environment where every child is given the
opportunity to develop and thrive. Central to our school's mission is the belief that all children possess unique gifts and talents. It is ourgoal to support student academic, social, emotional, and physical growth and well-being through balanced and responsive methods."
The New Jersey Department of Education may nominate up to only nine public schools annually from the roughly 2,500 schools across approximately 685 districts in the state.
Kristin Gomez, Hamilton Elementary School Principal, expressed her immense pride in sharing this prestigious recognition with the entire community.
“The National Blue Ribbon award highlights the dedication and hard work of our students, staff, and families who have united to create a culture of excellence and care at Hamilton,” Mrs. Gomez said. “I look forward to continuing this proud tradition and building on our success as we enter this school year, ensuring that every student thrives academically, socially, and emotionally. I am honored to be at the helm of that effort.”
On behalf of the district, Dr. Brett Charleston, superintendent of schools, and Mr. Gregory Van Nest, assistant superintendent of schools, expressed how proud they are of the students and staff.
“Hamilton Elementary joins Glen Rock High School in earning this recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School," they said in a statement. "As we celebrate this accomplishment, let us remember that our collective efforts have elevated our entire district, and we remain steadfast in our mission to foster an environment of outstanding education in all of our schools.”
