See 'Bittersweet' Letter Given To Staff As Mahwah Sheraton Hotel Shuts For Good

The shiny Sheraton at the northern tip of New Jersey has closed and will be demolished. Here's what the management told the staff.

MAHWAH, NJ — The iconic Sheraton Hotel in Mahwah — just south of the border with New York State — closed for good on Friday, Dec. 15, because the owners of the property received approval to build two warehouses on the site.

Since opening in 1988, the 22-story hotel, located on Route 17 just south of the New York State border, has hosted conventions and other events.

In August, hotel management announced plans to lay off 91 workers by the end of the year.

In September, Stephen Bello of Blue Sky Hospitality told Patch, "The hotel will be closing on December 15th. We will vacate the space no later than December 31st. The hotel is very much part of the community and has created many memories and has supported businesses and families — but it is closing due to the redevelopment plans."

The owners of the Crossroads Corporate Center property — Crossroads Developers Associates LLC and Garden Crossroads LLC — had submitted plans to the town last year to build the warehouses. The Mahwah Planning Board heard testimony about a revised plan in summer. See the hearing here.

The owners of the hotel initially fought the town's plans to redevelop the area. See previous reporting here.

Over the weekend, Bello shared a letter that he gave to the staff, in which he describes the closing as "bittersweet."

"We find ourselves in a challenging situation," he wrote.

Letter To Sheraton Mahwah Hotel Staff

Dear Sam and the entire team of the Sheraton Mahwah,

I have been hesitant to draft this letter, albeit under circumstances that are bittersweet for the entire organization, Blue Sky Hospitality Solutions, and Navika Capital. It is with a mix of gratitude and sadness that I write to express my deepest thanks for the incredible dedication and hard work each one of you has contributed to our partners, investors, and one another.

As many of you are already aware, we find ourselves in a challenging situation, a paradox of sorts, that today we close the Sheraton Mahwah and at the end of the month we depart the location. The reason for the closure is still confusing to me but has something to do with progress and redevelopment. However, it is with a heavy heart that we must close the business.

Naveen recognizes the impact it has had on each member of the exceptional team. And continues to ask me to find opportunities for those members who want to continue to work within our organization that we were able to place in meaningful roles.

Throughout our time together, it has been a privilege to witness the unwavering commitment, passion, and professionalism that you have brought to your roles. Your efforts have played a crucial role in making the Sheraton a beacon of hospitality and excellence in the community. From Guest Services, from the kitchen to the engineering team, every department has been an integral part of creating the warm and welcoming atmosphere that our guests have come to cherish.

In the face of these challenging times, your resilience and positive attitude have been nothing short of inspiring creating good Karma for our guests and follow associates. You have faced every obstacle with grace and determination, always putting the needs of our guests first. It is your hard work and dedication that have inspired me. This building is a home away from home for countless Guests, Brides, and Grooms, Sweet Sixteen, and Corporate Retreats, we are all eternally grateful for the authentic experience you have created.

While the closing of this Landmark marks the end of a chapter, it does not diminish the incredible accomplishments and memories we have created together. The bonds formed and the experiences shared will forever hold a special place in our hearts and the community.

Once again, please know, that Naveen, Alex, Madhu, Mark, Arpit, and the entire home office want each of you to know that your contributions have not gone unnoticed. The skills and talents you have demonstrated during your time with us will undoubtedly carry you to new and exciting opportunities.

As we navigate these transitions, I want to assure each one of you that your contributions have not gone unnoticed. The skills and talents you have demonstrated during your time with us will undoubtedly carry you into new and exciting opportunities.

Thank you have your hard work, dedication, and the exceptional service you have provided to our guests and each other. It has been an honor to work alongside such an extraordinary group of professionals.

Wishing you all the best – enjoy the holiday season.

And please stay connected as you know where to find us.

With heartfelt thank you.

Naveen, Steve, Madhu, and Mark.
