Thursday: Resident Says Hawes Traffic 'Dangerous' to Children; More Residents Speak for Library Budget

An update on sports and fields accompany those items on today.

1) Resident Gary Negrycz told the council he had a concern with traffic at . Negrycz, who lives on the corner of Dorchester and South Pleasant, said he and his wife have called the police a number of times having observed parents driving kids to school "and they park on the crosswalk," and in front of the fire hydrant.

"Any kid who wants to try and walk to school, has now got to sneak out," he said, adding that the law requires vehicles to park 15 feet beyond the crosswalk. While the police have come down and given tickets, Negrycz said "they don't seem to be doing anything."

"We're going to hurt a kid down there. It's just not right," he said. "These parents are so concerned with their own individual child and nobody elses."

3) For a second straight week, a handful of residents to grant Library Director Nancy Greene's request for enough money to allow the library to remain open on Fridays and Sundays. Residents pointed to the value the library had to the kids, with one resident saying his son became a prolific reader because of the library; as well as other residents saying how much use they get out of it, particularly over the summer.

4) The boys varsity baseball team will take on New Milford at 4:00 p.m. at Vets. The boys lacrosse team will play Glen Ridge in an away game at 4:00 p.m. The girls softball team will square off with Passaic Valley High at 4:10 p.m. The girls lacrosse team, the state's top ranked squad, will play Hopewell Valley Central High at Sommerville at 4:30 p.m.

5) Superintendent of Schools Dr. Daniel Fishbein said in an e-mail to Patch that if weather works out, the will be reopened by the weekend. Vets Southeast, Stevens, Maple, Brookside, and RHS Stadium fields are not playable until further notice, according to the RBSA. No cost projections on cleanup costs have been made, Fishbein said.
