BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail train has been running throughout Hudson County for more than 15 years, from Bayonne at the southern end to North Bergen. While it's helped revitalize some underserved neighborhoods along its path, it still hasn't reached Bergen County as originally intended.

In fact, there's not even one Bergen County station on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line.

And now, the Federal Transit Administration said more information is needed about environmental impacts on the extension before it can move forward, due to changes in floodplains, traffic patterns, and more.

NJ Transit spokesperson Jim Smith said Wednesday that as a result, the proposed 9-mile extention into Bergen County could now be delayed by 24 months.

Last week, the FTA said,"Based on FTA's most recent review of the Project, FTA has decided to rescind the NOI (Notice of Intent) due to all-encompassing changes in the Project design and environmental impacts in the following areas: floodplains, stormwater management, cultural resources, hazardous materials, traffic and parking, and air quality, all of which have occurred since 2007."

Tedesco, Menendez Weigh In

After that announcement, elected officials expressed frustrations, saying people in Bergen County, a mostly suburban area, could use another transit option.

Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco, III said, “Let me make this crystal clear: the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail extension into Bergen County is not a luxury; it's a necessity."

He added, "This project, which is critically important for the residents and businesses of one of the most densely populated regions in the nation, holds the key to alleviating congestion, meeting the ever-growing mass transit demands of our community, and ultimately fostering a healthier and sustainable environment for all."

Bergen County Commissioner Chairman Tom Sullivan said, “The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail northern extension has been promised for over a decade. There is a long list of reasons why it’s a necessary addition to Bergen County’s transit map, including environmental benefits and sustainable economic growth."

U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez also weighed in, saying, "Extending the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail into Bergen County is about spurring job growth, supporting New Jersey small businesses, reducing energy costs, and saving commuters money and time they could spend with their families."

He added, "The Federal Transit Administration (FTA)’s decision to further delay the planning and environmental review process on this critically needed project will come at a great cost to the families, workers, and small businesses in one of the most densely populated areas of New Jersey, who have waited far too long for expanded transit options."

“Over 25 years ago, when I advocated for the creation of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, it was always envisioned as a project that would be extended and expanded."
