A medical biller stole $400k by giving unauthorized refunds from her Bergen County employer, prosecutors say.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A medical biller stole $400k by giving unauthorized refunds from her Bergen County employer, prosecutors say.

Briana Rodriguez, 36, of Bloomfield, was arrested on Tuesday, June 18, and charged with second-degree theft by unlawful taking, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office said.

Prosecutors said that in March of 2022, the Hackensack Police Department notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit of an alleged employee embezzlement.

Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit investigated.

Prosecutors say that Rodriguez "used her employment as a medical billing professional to embezzle approximately $400,000 from her employer through unauthorized refunds to accounts under her control."

She was arrested outside of her residence in Bloomfield.

She was released pending her first court appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
