ARMCHAIR TRAVEL PRESENTATION Elephants in Italy?: Sicily and Southern Italy

Join world traveler and photographer Lorraine Matys as she guides you on a slide-talk through Sicily and Southern Italy.

Hannibal's march across the Alps from Spain in the 3rd Century B.C.E. with an army that included 30-some elephants was only one of many evidences that Italy was a crossroads of the ancient world.

Sicily and Southern Italy contain some of the best-preserved monuments of the ancient Greeks.

The audience will visit early Greek temples, see where stone for historic temples was quarried, learn about influences from ancient Egypt and view some of the most important Roman mosaics.

There also will be tours of Pompeii and Herculaneum, cities devastated by the Mount Vesuvias eruption of 79 A.D. and a hike to a crater within sight of the currently erupting Mount Etna.
