River Edge Mayor and Council Consider Sidewalk Dining

Outdoor dining would be permissible from April through November.

The governing body of River Edge is considering the approval of an outdoor dining ordinance allowing restaurants to set up tables outside during the warmer months so that patrons can enjoy the fresh air.

Introduced by Councilwoman Kathleen Murphy, the ordinance would include a permit for outside dining, which council seemed to agree would be an annual renewable charge of approximately $200, The ordinance would also carry a stipulation that outdoor dining would be confined to run between April 15 through Nov. 30. The council suggested adding that all tables and chairs not tethered be moved inside after the restaurant has closed every night.

Another stipulation is that no outdoor dining be permitted near a parking lot or driveway unless a buffer is installed to protect the diners.

The question arose about serving alcohol outside, but Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo said that each establishment would have to come back to the Mayor of Council to extend their liquor license.

The hearing on this matter will continue at the next meeting of the Mayor and Council.
