Local Guy Goes Global with National Geographic Photography Feature
Native Fair Havenite Steve Scanlon's photo will be highlighted by the magazine's website.
Steve Scanlon grew up in Fair Haven. The area holds many memories of pristine places for him. So, he's chosen to make a career out of capturing those special sites — in photographs.
Now, one of those signature spot shots has caught the eye of National Geographic. The magazine, reknowned for its top-of-the line photojournalism, has been featuring a photo of the day on its website.
Scanlon's image of Sands Beach Club in Sea Bright will be featured in the spot on Wednesday, May 29, and he is "thrilled." The photo was taken the June before Hurricane Sandy hit and demolished the beach clubs in the small seaside borough which is a summer bastion for locals.

"As we continue to rebuild, I am glad to be a part of the history depicting the way things once were," Scanlon said. "It's also exciting to see the rebirth of this great shore community."
They don't call it the Jersey Shore in the Rumson-Fair Haven area, they call it the beach.

And, whatever slice of it you park yourself on, public or private, it's a big part of growing up in the Rumson-Fair Haven area, as are the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers, that Scanlon likes to share with people through his work out of pure appreciation for it.
