Long Branch Man Died In Navesink River Fishing Trip, Police Say

RUMSON, NJ — State police have confirmed that a Long Branch man, 37, is the person who died when he went fishing on the Navesink River near Rumson Monday night.

Diego Ferreira was fishing in a kayak during the night hours of March 25 in the waters of the Navesink River, according to the investigation, said Trooper Troy McNair of the Office of Public Information. Ferreira's body was recovered Tuesday.

On Tuesday, at about 5:22 a.m., Troop “C” Hamilton Criminal Investigation Office got a report of a missing kayaker in the waters of the Navesink River in the area of Middletown Township, McNair said. The river runs between Rumson and Fair Haven to the south and Middletown to the north.

After being reported missing, search efforts for Ferreira were conducted by the Middletown and Rumson police departments, U.S. Coast Guard, Sea Bright Fire Rescue and New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau, police said.

The incident remains under investigation, McNair said, and provided no other information about the accident. Rumson police reported the recovery on Tuesday.
