NJ American Water Treatment Change To End In Monmouth Co.
The water treatment change is expected to conclude April 13, according to the water authority. The following municipalities are affected:
MONMOUTH COUNTY - Treatment changes to tap water in Monmouth County will subside this month, according to New Jersey American Water.
On April 13, the water utility will resume using chloramines in water treatment at its Swimming River Water Treatment Plant in Colts Neck and its Jumping Brook Water Treatment Plant in Neptune, according to a news release.
As part of an annual routine maintenance program for its water distribution system, New Jersey American Water temporarily changed the water treatment process in February from a chloramine (combination) residual to free chlorine residual in order for the company to perform routine maintenance.

“During the transition to free chlorine residual, some customers may have noticed a slight chlorine taste and odor in their water,” the water authority said in the release. “With the resumption of the chloramination process, the taste and smell of chlorine will subside. Chloramines have long been an effective method of water disinfection that meet all EPA and NJDEP drinking water standards and have been used in Monmouth and Ocean counties since 2012.”
As recommended, those who wish to reduce the taste of chlorine can place water in an uncovered glass container in a refrigerator overnight.
