Pet Waste Cited In Fair Haven Beach Pollution

Fair Haven alert: A swimming beach by the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club has high levels of fecal bacteria, officials say.

FAIR HAVEN, NJ —High levels of fecal bacteria have been detected in state monitoring of water in the beach area on the west side of the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club, the borough says.

The beach is considered a swimming beach.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Marine Water, has been monitoring and testing the water at the end of the creek behind Doughty and Browns Lanes and at the swimming area in the Shrewsbury River, the borough said in a social media post.

The agency's findings show high levels of fecal bacteria in the water, which has been determined to be from either wildlife or domestic animals.

The borough asks that pet owners clean up after their pets every time and not allow the rain to wash it into the river.
