Black History Month Dinner & Comedy Show To Be Held In Scotch Plains
The event will be held at the historic Shady Rest Clubhouse — the first African-American country club in the United States.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — In honor of Black History Month this February, Scotch Plains will host a special dinner and comedy show at the historical Shady Rest Clubhouse.
Shady Rest is the first African-American country club in the United States, and the National Park Service recently designated it as a historic landmark.

During its heyday, Shady Rest was a center of African American recreation and culture, hosting icons like W.E.B. Du Bois, Ella Fitzgerald and Althea Gibson.
On Friday, Feb. 24, comics Monique Latise, Don Hines and Al Caroll will entertain guests at the clubhouse. All proceeds will go toward to the Preserve the Shady Rest Committee to help "solidify Shady Rest's place in history."

The show will be hosted by local emcee, comedian, podcaster and author Marklyn "MisterDirect" Johnson. DJ Oakie E will provide the music, and Savory Selections Catering will provide the food.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and dinner will be served from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
The comedy show will begin at 8:30 p.m. Music and dancing will follow, and the event is BYOB.
