Fire Significantly Damages Scotch Plains Home Over Weekend

Volunteer firefighters were participating in the Westfield Fire Department's 150th Anniversary parade when they got called to the fire.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Volunteer firefighters were participating in the Westfield Fire Department's 150th Anniversary parade on Saturday when they got called to a fire in Scotch Plains, said Fanwood Fire Department.

At 12:24 p.m., the Scotch Plains Police responded to 2069 Portland Ave. for a reported smoke condition of smoke coming from the windows.

Officers arrived to see flames coming from the first floor, said Scotch Plains Sgt. Andrew Gitto.

Scotch Plains and Fanwood Fire Departments extinguished the fire on the first floor of the home.

The house was vacant at the time of the fire and is deemed non-suspicious. The home sustained substantial fire and water damage, said Gitto.

The Fanwood Fire Department was organized in 1890 and has provided fire protection services to the residents of Fanwood and neighboring communities for more than 130 years.
