The Shady Rest Country Club is the first African American owned and operated club in the United States. The Preserve Shady Rest Committee is comprised of local residents and supporters who believe in the importance of preserving the history of the Shady Rest Golf and Country Club. We are excited to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Shady Rest.
We invite you to a FREE showing of the Green Book. The Shady Rest was one of the safe places for African-Americans to visit during the years of segregation and was listed in the Green Book. The Negro Motorist Green Book (also The Negro Travelers' Green Book, or simply the Green Book) was an annual guide book for African-Americans. Many African- Americans took to driving, in part to avoid segregation on public transportation. The Green Book provided safe locations, to eat and rest among other amenities.
