NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ — Sheelen's Fish Market of Fanwood was finally able to officially celebrate the opening of its second location on the Union and Somerset County border.

Owners Sean Flannery and Frank Pascale of Sheelen's Fish Market originally signed a lease for the second location at 527 Route 22 West in North Plainfield in November 2020 and held a soft opening in April 2021. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, they weren't able to host a grand opening until Nov. 30.

"It's exciting," said Flannery of the new location. "The space came out beautiful and in the long run, we will be very happy."

The North Plainfield location is similar to the Fanwood location as they both offer an assortment of fresh fish. The new location also has 10 tables to dine inside and some outside as well along with plenty of parking.

Take out is also available as they work with Grubhub, Uber Eats, DoorDash and call to order to pick up. The new location also offers plenty of delicious options.

"We are renowned for our lobster rolls and we always have four homemade soups every day. Fish and chips are also something everybody loves along with the crab cakes and shrimp cocktails," said Flannery.

Additionally, with the holidays, both the Fanwood and North Plainfield locations will be selling the fish/dishes for the Feast of Seven Fishes, a huge feast of fish prepared in many different ways.

Historically enjoyed on Christmas Eve, every family prepares the meal differently, sometimes serving more than 7 fishes.

The typical items served, and those that will be on sale at Sheelen's Fish Market, are: baccala (salt cod), shellfish, eel, octopus, calamari (squid), scungilli (conch), clams/mussels, shrimp, and lobster.

Customers can also call in for special requests and they'll get the fish they're looking for.

Overall, Flannery is excited for the future noting the location right off Route 22 is ideal for the area.

"We felt we could get people coming out of the Watchung Mall. And the Watchung, Green Brook and Warren demographic enjoy high-end fish. We did a study and there is no place in 10 miles to buy fresh fish," said Flannery.
