Sydney McLaughlin Wins Olympic Gold, Breaks World Record
The runner hailing from Union Catholic in Scotch Plains edged out fellow American Dalilah Muhammad in the 400-meter hurdle at the Olympics.
SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Sydney McLaughlin, a 2017 graduate of Union Catholic Regional High School, is an Olympic gold medalist after edging out fellow American Dalilah Muhammad at the Tokyo Olympics.
McLaughlin crushed a second world record during the 400-meter hurdle when she became the first woman to run the 400m hurdles event in 51.46 seconds during the Olympic finals on Tuesday night.
The race was super tight with Rio gold medalist Muhammad coming in with a time of 51.58. Muhammad earned silver in the race.

McLaughlin had previously competed in June during the Olympic Trials coming in at 51.90 seconds beating Rio gold medalist Muhammad's previous record of 52.16. Read More: Union Co. Runner Beats 400m Hurdles World Record At Olympic Trial
Hometown fans gathered at the Stagehouse in Mountainside to cheer on McLaughlin as she raced against Muhammad.
