North Bergen Woman Dies Boogie Boarding Off Hilton Head

A 50-year-old North Bergen woman died Sunday while boogie boarding off the South Carolina coast.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC — A 50-year-old North Bergen woman died Sunday while boogie boarding off Hilton Head island in South Carolina.

Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff were called to Collier Beach Road on Hilton Head Island just before 1 a.m. Sunday after receiving a call about an unresponsive woman in the surf, the agency said in a news release.

When deputies arrived, they found the woman wearing a wetsuit with a boogie board still attached to her ankle. She was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. She is presumed to have drowned.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office later identified the woman as 50-year-old Aine Ni Cheallaigh of North Bergen, according to a NJ Advance Media report.

Authorities are investigating Cheallaigh's death, but said they don't consider it suspicious.
