Death Of Beloved Bus Driver Mourned In South Brunswick School District

Thomas Johnson was a member of the transportation department since 2017. He was the driver for Brooks Crossing and Brunswick Acres.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — South Brunswick School District is grieving the death of “beloved" bus driver Thomas Johnson who died last week.

Johnson has been a member of the school district’s transportation department since 2017.

During Thursday’s Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Scott Feder informed the community about Johnson’s death and called for a moment of silence.

Johnson was the driver for Brooks Crossing Elementary School and Brunswick Acres School last year.

“The transportation department has now suffered its second loss in a short period of time,” Feder said. “Our condolences go out to Mr. Johnson's loved ones and all of his friends and colleagues throughout the district. Mr. Johnson is going to be sorely missed.”

Born in Newark, 61-year-old Johnson was a resident of Plainfield. He worked at the post office in Plainfield for many years and then for over 20 years at the Judkins Colonial Home, before moving to South Brunswick School District, according to his obituary.

It was his full-time job as a driver in the school district that excited him the most, according to the obituary.

"He loved the students he picked up all year, the parents and faculty. He loved his job so much and took such pride in his position one year he was given an award for perfect attendance,” the obituary said.

Johnson loved dining out, dancing and watching reruns of his favorite TV shows - The Honeymooners, Sanford and Son, The Flintstones, and The Jetsons.
