‘Kindest Individual’: South Brunswick Mourns EMS Volunteer

Longtime EMS volunteer and community caretaker Manny Mulero died on Dec. 5. Police, EMS, and community members paid tribute.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Manny Mulero, a longtime EMS volunteer and community caretaker, died on Sunday, Dec. 5.

Mulero was a teacher with the New York City School system before his retirement. He was well known in the community for his involvement. Mulero was a member of the Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad (MJFAS) for 32 years.

The South Brunswick Police Department mourned Mulero. “In retirement, he continued to give back serving for five years as a crossing guard with the police department. In 2020 he coordinated fit testing to ensure all police officers had the proper masks while battling the pandemic,” the police department said.

The MJFAS called Mulero the “kindest, sweetest” person. "Manny, who passed away on Sunday, was truly one of the kindest, sweetest, and most caring individuals any of us could ever hope to meet. Manny frequently provided rehab services to our firefighters during our two annual fire academy live-burns in his capacity as an EMT for the Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad,” the department said in a Facebook post.

“Manny, with his wife Maria, frequently attended our annual installation dinner and always received one of the loudest ovations when the guests were introduced.”

Tributes poured in for Mulero on Facebook with many calling him a “great man,” “wonderful teacher and friend.”

A June 2012 Patch article details how Mulero along with his crew helped deliver a baby in the EMS ambulance at 2:30 a.m. When Mulero and his team arrived on the scene, they found the woman's contractions were five minutes apart.

With no time to take her to the hospital, they realized they had to deliver the baby themselves.

"We could see the baby's head and knew we would not make it to the hospital," Mulero had said. "The entire EMS crew did a great job working together to deliver the baby. It was a great feeling for all of us."
