Man Arrested After 4 Hour Standoff At South Brunswick Home: Cops

The man had barricaded himself inside the house and threatened to harm law enforcement, police said.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — A South Brunswick man was taken into custody after a four hour standoff was resolved safely during the weekend, Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said.

On Saturday, at 2 p.m. police received a call of an assault victim at South Brunswick Square Mall. Officers contacted the victim and learned that the assault had taken place at a home on Aspen Court in the nearby Wynwood Estates.

Officers were told that the suspect had threatened to harm law enforcement or anyone else who came to his home, Hayducka said.

When officers arrived at the Aspen Court home and attempted to contact the suspect, Naseir Zikria, he refused to come to the door and exit his home.

Zikria, 59, occasionally looked out the windows but rejected attempts to resolve the standoff. He was the only person in the house, Hayducka said.

The man had barricaded himself and threatened he would have to be taken out in a box, police said. Crisis negotiators from the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office responded and attempted to contact him for several hours. But Zikria refused all attempts to communicate with police or leave his house.

Just after 6 p.m., Special Operations Response Team members breached the front door and took Zikria into custody.

He was charged with assault, terroristic threats, and resisting arrest. Zikria was lodged in the Middlesex County Correction Center pending his first court appearance.

Hayducka thanked the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office Special Operations Response Team for handling the situation.

“It took several hours, but the incident was resolved safely. The coordination and training of the SORT members along with the South Brunswick officers successfully resolved the standoff,” Hayducka said.
