NJ AG's Office Releases Video Of Fatal South Brunswick Police Shooting
Shamar Leggette was wanted for several felonies. He was killed in a shootout with police at a motel on Route 1 in Monmouth Junction.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – The state Attorney General’s Office has released footage from body-worn and surveillance cameras showing the fatal shootout between police and a man in South Brunswick on Jan. 24.
The man was previously identified as Shamar Leggette, 41, of Brooklyn, New York.
According to a preliminary investigation, on Jan. 24, around 2:05 p.m., members of the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, New York office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, arrived at a motel on Route 1 South, in Monmouth Junction, to execute an arrest warrant for Leggette who was being sought in connection with several felony investigations.

At approximately 2:47 p.m., Leggette left a motel room and exchanged gunfire with officers in the motel’s parking lot, according to redacted footage. Eight members of the Task Force fired their weapons at Leggette.
One additional officer deployed non-lethal force before the fatal altercation, according to the investigation.

Leggette was pronounced dead around 4:29 p.m.
Authorities found two firearms near him. No officers were hit during the shooting.

A 2019 law, requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of deaths that occur during encounters with a law enforcement officer. It also requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
The investigation is ongoing.
