South Brunswick District Requests For Increase In Seats For Preschool
More students will be able to access preschool in the township in the coming year if the request is approved.
SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — The South Brunswick School District recently submitted an application to the state, requesting an increase in seats for its preschool program.
The district has requested an increase of almost 100 students, bringing the total number just short of 350 regular education students and about 40 to 50 special education students, Superintendent Scott Feder informed the community during the Nov. 16 BOE meeting.
“That's getting us closer to that ‘preschool universe,’ where we eventually have every parent that wants it to have access,” Feder said.

This request for an increase is in line with the district’s initial plan of having 800 seats for 3-to-4-year-olds in five years. The district currently has 150 students in its preschool program.
In 2022, the district was awarded $2 million by the state to run a full-day preschool program for 3-and-4-year-olds.

The school district's long-term plan will include partnering with local licensed childcare centers to help expand quality preschool for community students.
“It's a tremendous amount of time and work to identify a partner, but it's the right work,” Feder said.
The district will be making a decision on preschool admission earlier than last year. “We get better at it. So that's all happening for a clean, crisp opening for next year, hopefully at full capacity,” Feder said.
