South Brunswick PD Begin 'Operation Safe Schools' As New Academic Year Begins

Officers will be stationed at every school daily to support students, staff, and families.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — South Brunswick police are increasing their presence at all schools as students return to class this week, emphasizing student safety as the new academic year begins.

Under "Operation Safe Schools," officers will be stationed at every school daily to support students, staff, and families while maintaining a secure environment.

The Traffic Safety Bureau has identified seven key locations where drivers should expect heavy congestion and exercise extra caution during morning and afternoon school hours.

The busiest areas during school commute times include Ridge Road at Stouts Lane (7:15-7:45 a.m.), Georges Road/Major Road/Kingston Lane intersection (7:45-8:10 a.m.), and Route 1/Promenade Boulevard (7:45-8:15 a.m.). Four additional locations—Kory Drive, Roberts Street and Waller Court, Constable Road, and Cambridge Road—will see peak traffic from 8:50-9:10 a.m. and again at 3:30 p.m.

The police department highlighted its collaborative relationships with the South Brunswick School District and area private schools in preparing for what officials hope will be a safe and successful school year.

Here are some tips for students walking to and from school

  • Pay attention to all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard – never cross the street against a light, even if you don’t see any traffic coming.
  • Always walk on the sidewalk (where provided), otherwise walk facing traffic.
  • Walk with a friend(s).
  • Wear reflective material. It makes you more visible to street traffic.
  • Never run out from between cars.

Tips for drivers

  • Be mindful of students and drive with caution in school zones.
  • Watch for school buses picking up and discharging students.
  • Allow extra time for your morning commute.
  • Be mindful of added traffic around schools.
  • Be aware of extra pedestrian traffic.
  • Yield to students or pedestrians in crosswalks.
