Updated: New Dates for Back-to-School Night
Changes in dates for a number of schools mean four-hour days for students. SOMEA and the school district offer statements.

The ink is dry; put Back-to-School night on the calendar.
Around the district, parents have received calls and emails informing them of changed dates for elementary Back-to-School night. Those days are four-hour days for students; the Y will provide school-based and Y-based after-school care, as usual.
These are the dates for district elementary Back-to-School nights. Each is a four-hour day:

A note from the Y:
On-Site Programs: The Y’s After School Care program will have staff available at the schools to accommodate these early dismissals. All Before School Care programs will be open at their regular times for drop-off on these days.
Off-Site Programs: All children who regularly attend the off-site After School Care programs at the Civic House or Jefferson Avenue Sites will be bused by the Y staff to the Jefferson Avenue Site at the early dismissal time. The Civic House Site participants will be transported to the Civic House at 3:00pm when the buses leave for regular dismissal school pick-ups.
Please remember to send a lunch with your child on his/her scheduled early dismissal day.
Both district middle schools, SOMS and MMS, will have Back-to-School night on Thurs., Sept. 22. This is a four-hour day.
YouthNet will not provide after-school care that afternoon. Contact YouthNet with questions or concerns.
As parents scrambled to re-arrange travel schedules and babysitting, the district released this statement about the change of dates: "As required under the new SOMEA contract, on days when Back-to-School Nights are scheduled for elementary schools, the school day will be shortened to four-hour days. The district is notifying all parents through School Messenger. Some Back-to-School Nights will be changed to allow for more timely notification. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."
SOMEA rep Paul Bethea told Patch: "This is something that the BOE negotiated. This is what they wanted. SOMEA just got the calendars the other day and it was discussed at our head rep meeting [Monday] night — 'Why isn't the half day on the calendar?'" Bethea said that SOMEA then notified the district of the oversight.
