No Injuries in Sunday Night 10 North Ridgewood Road Fire

A fire ruled accidental was extinguished on the fourth floor

Just before 9 p.m. on Sunday night, the South Orange Fire Department responded to a call at 10 North Ridgewood Road, the 64-unit apartment building at the corner of South Orange Avenue.

A resident called 911, reporting smoke coming out of apartment 408 and getting no response from within. 

Firefighters responded, and forcibly opened the door to 408. There they found heavy smoke and a fire in the kitchen.

At the same time, Maplewood Fire Department also responded. The South Orange Police Department evacuated residents, and the South Orange Rescue Squad supplied aid to the residents.

The fire was quickly extinguished.  Apartment 308 was checked for extension and water damage.  Maplewood Engine was assigned to help with overhaul on the fourth floor.
 
There was moderate smoke damage to the third and fourth floor hallways, with heavy fire damage the kitchen with smoke and water damage to the rest of apartment 408.  Apartment 308 experienced light water damage.  
 
The origin of the fire was found to be in the cabinetry under the sink in the kitchen.  The cause of the fire was found to be an electrical short in the house wiring.  The fire was ruled accidental.
 
Apartment 408 was unoccupied at the time. Apartment 408 was ruled uninhabitable, the superintendent was on the scene and was instructed to have their fire alarm system checked out in the morning.

There were no injuries.
