December 25th means many things to many people. At Oheb Shalom Congregation in South Orange, December 25th will mean "Mitzvah*Bration", a day of community service and celebration. A kickoff light breakfast will be served at 10:30, followed by a variety of community service projects, including:
* The Young Oheb Families Initiative (YOFI) will sing Hanukkah songs and visit with the residents of Daughters of Israel in West Orange.
* A group will visit Inglemoor Care Center in Livingston to perform annual holiday job relief and enjoy a sing-a-long with residents.
* Rabbi Mark Cooper will lead synagogue members visiting the Jewish Federation Charles Bierman Home and the Village Apartments at
Vose Avenue to spin the dreidel and share Hanukkah fun.
* Oheb Shalom volunteers will prepare a meal to be served the following week at the new Community Soup Kitchen.
* People of all ages will write cards and letters to send to "lonely soldiers" (non-Israeli soldiers serving in the IDF).
The service activities will be followed by a Hanukkah celebration back at Oheb Shalom, complete with holiday fun, including dreidl games and singing, along with a magic show, a congregational Hanukkiah lighting for individuals and families, all to be followed by that classic of all December 25th activities, a Kosher Chinese food dinner.
