Photo of the Day: A Vintage Celebration in South Orange-Maplewood

A photo of the Manganello family, circa 1930, shows an old-fashioned celebration

Greetings from the past!

Thanks to , Patch came upon a wealth of photos from the Manganello family of Academy Street. Longtime residents, they have South Orange and Maplewood listed as their address on documents, so perhaps they called both home.

This photo was taken in the backyard of the Academy Street home by photographer L. D. Crowell, whose Roland Avenue address and phone number (S. O. 2-1360) is stamped on the back. A child's wavy script on the back of the photo notes that Angelina and Antonette Manganello, Grade 4, were pictured, as well as Lucy Manganello, who "tried to go to school." Based on a 1940 diploma among the photos, this photo was probably taken in 1930.

Members of the family are gathered below a grape arbor that still grows in the yard on Academy Street. At least two men are raising their glasses in a toast.

By way of the Manganello family and Patch, salud and Happy New Year!
