Crime In Summit: The Year So Far

Chief Ryan Peters is commending the work done by local law enforcement.

SUMMIT, NJ — Police Chief Ryan Peters laid out an updated city crime report on Tuesday night at the Common Council meeting.

Violent crime, property crime, traffic enforcement, and other calls for service were covered from January through September with comparisons to the few years prior. "They're doing a phenomenal job," Peters said of his team. "I want to commend the excellent work of our entire department."

Violent Crime

While no homicides have been recorded so far, the number of violent crime cases is already at 16. That is nine more than the total during the same period in 2024. Chief Peters addressed this directly, telling residents this jump is due to an increase in attempted rape allegations.

Vehicle Theft

There have been 11 motor vehicle thefts so far this year. This number is down slightly from the 14 in 2024, and 15 in 2023.

Nine arrests were made in those cases, with five of the thefts occurring at car dealerships.

Other Property Crime

Assault cases fell to 38 from January through September, down from 62 in 2024 and 50 in 2023. Larcenies also dropped to 52, down from 93 in 2024.

Traffic Enforcement

The number of vehicle stops rose this year up to 5,610 from 4,179 in 2024, an increase Chief Peters attributes to more proactive enforcement and opportunities to educate drivers.

Parking summonses overall dropped from 2,682 in 2024 to 2,390.

Service Calls

A total of 36,846 calls for service were logged between January and September, a jump from 35,231 in 2024.
