Pitbulls Kill Small Dog, Hurt 70-Year-Old Woman In Union County Attack: Police

The dogs' owner left the scene of the attack, according to police.

SUMMIT, NJ — Two pitbulls were found and impounded after killing a small dog and hurting its 70-year-old owner while they were walking down a street on Nov. 5, Summit Police said.

At around 6:50 a.m., officers responded to VEG Emergency Hospital for a report of a small dog that was hurt after it was attacked by another animal. The dog's owner was also there and told the officers that around 5:50 a.m. they were attacked by two leashed pitbulls who broke free from their handler.

The woman was knocked to the ground and injured her upper thighs, right hand, and right arm. Her dog died later that day.

After the attack, the owner regained control of the dogs and left the area, authorities said.

After searching the area and using surveillance footage, law enforcement retraced the owner's path leading up to and after the attack. They were able to identify the owner and safely remove the dogs from the home with the help of Summit Animal Control and the Summit Health Department.

"I want to recognize the diligent work of our Detective Bureau in bringing resolution to a deeply distressing incident," said Summit Police Chief Ryan Peters. "Their swift and thorough efforts reflect our commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all residents."

The pitbulls were taken to an animal shelter where they will remain while the case is under review.
