Summit Opens Emergency Shelter

As part of the city's state of emergency plan, Mayor Ellen Dickson has issued a statement saying that emergency shelter is available at the Summit Middle school. While there are a limited number of cots for sleeping — she said in a Facebook message that only about 50 beds were available — residents in dire need of warm shelter are asked to head to 272 Morris Avenue.

The shelter is expected to be in operation until 8p.m. on Tuesday.

"The shelter should be used ONLY if you lose power, and only as a last resort," Summit Police Chief Robert Weck said in an email statement earlier today. "It is always best to shelter in your home or with family and friends if possible."

Those who do intend on heading to the shelter must use extreme caution when travelling, as trees and downed wires are posing a threat to everyone during the storm.

The following list of items are recommended for those staying at the Middle School:

• Needed medications in the prescription bottle. 
• Bedding, blankets and pillows. 
• Non-perishable food. 
• Bottled Water
