Concerns Raised Over Dog Run

A plan to turn a section of into a dog run was met with concerns from area residents worried about its potential impact on the neighborhood. 

Wilson Avenue resident Bob Ghiradella, who said he was speaking on behalf of fellow neighbors, told council members Tuesday parking and traffic were among potential pitfalls of the dog park. 

"We dread to think of what will happen if the dog run is established and becomes popular," Ghiradella said. "Dog runs are not attractive places."

A metered parking lot is small and often becomes filled, Ghiradella said. On weekends, traffic from the park can cause backups on River Road. 

Ghiradella asked council members to consider other township parks for the dog run.

The Phelps Park pool has been closed for about five years. Estimates to make the pool compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act came in at $700,000. 

Dog run supporters have said the location is removed from nearby homes, and already has fencing and a water supply. 

Township Manager William Broughton said the pool has since been removed and work on the land was ongoing. 

A proposal to establish a dog run on Windsor Road, across from Temple Emeth, was scrapped after officials learned the project could impact wetlands.
