Councilman Named to Holocaust Education Commission
Gov. Chris Christie selects Teaneck council member for state post.

The following news release was submitted by Councilman Yitz Stern:
Yitz Stern, a member of the Teaneck Township Council, has been appointed by Governor Chris Christie to serve on the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education. This appointment was made as the Governor commemorated Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah) on Thursday, April 19.
“As New Jerseyans solemnly mark Holocaust Remembrance Day, we pause to pay tribute to the lives of the six million innocent victims killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust,” Christie said. “More than 67 years ago, when the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps were liberated, the world stood up and promised ‘never again.’ Today gives us an opportunity to remember that horrible tragedy, reaffirm that promise and recommit ourselves to never allowing such atrocities to happen again.”

The Commission’s core mission is to promote Holocaust and genocide education in the State of New Jersey. As such, it acts as a resource to the NJ Department of Education to assist schools with various aspects of meeting the requirements of the mandate to provide Holocaust and genocide education. It also coordinates designated events that provide appropriate memorialization of the Holocaust on a regular basis throughout the state.
“I was honored to be asked to serve on the Commission, particularly since Teaneck was one of the two school districts that initially approached the State’s Department of Education to develop curriculum materials and training programs in this area,” said Stern. “As a child of Holocaust survivors, I am humbled by this appointment and look forward to helping New Jersey continue to be a leader in innovative Holocaust education for many years to come.”
