E-Bike Safety

Teaneck Police Chief McGurr reminded e-bike users that "While electronic bicycles offer convenient and environmentally friendly transportation, they must be operated safely and in accordance with New Jersey law."

He noted that:

  • E-bike riders must follow the same rules of the road as motorists, including traffic signals, lane markings, and right-of-way requirements.
  • Ride predictably: Avoid sudden lane changes or movements into traffic. Always signal your intentions and make yourself visible to drivers.
  • Use designated areas when available: Stay in bike lanes or on the right side of the roadway whenever possible; avoid riding on medians or areas not intended for travel.
  • Wear safety gear: A properly fitted helmet greatly reduces the risk of serious injury. Bright or reflective clothing and lighting are strongly recommended, especially at night.
  • Know your e-bike: Higher speeds and quick acceleration can surprise riders and motorists alike. Operate your e-bike at safe speeds appropriate for traffic, lighting, and road conditions.
  • "The Teaneck Police Department encourages all e-bike users, and motorists sharing the road with them, to remain alert, exercise caution, and prioritize safety to help prevent future tragedies."
