Fire at Ief-Al-Ghazaly School Causes Minor Damage

Classes will likely go on as planned Tuesday after a fire in the school's basement.

A fire Monday night at the Ief-Al-Ghazaly school on North Street, near Linden Avenue, caused minor damage, school officials said.

It appeared that a television and other electrical equipment had caught fire in a basement nursery, Asaad Aref, a school board member, said at the scene.   School is expected to open on a normal schedule Tuesday.

"If there were babies in there, it would have been bad," Aref said.

The biggest concern was getting smoke cleared out of the building before school, he said. Firefighters setup a fan near the burnt area to help ventilate any fumes.

No injuries were reported and the damage was contained to the school's basement, officials said.  The flames were first reported around 9 p.m.
