River Road Reopened After Utility Work

A section of River Road was closed Thursday morning while crews removed a large tree that had become tangled with overhead power lines.

River Road, between Grenville Avenue and Wendel Place, was reopened around 3 p.m. Thursday after crews removed a large tree that had become tangled with power lines.

The job was handled by the Bergen County Public Works Department, with help from Public Service Electric & Gas.  No power outages were reported and the closure was part of scheduled tree removal work, a utility spokeswoman said.

A large PSE&G crane was at the scene late Thursday morning along with a wood chipper from a private tree removal service.  Police were stationed at Grenville Avenue and detour signs setup around the blocked area.  No traffic delays were reported.

Crews with the same large crane were doing similar tree removal work on Walnut Street, between Teaneck Road and Lees Avenue, workers said. It was unclear if more road closures were planned in the township.

County officials did not immediately return calls for comment.
