Teaneck Above State Average in Giving, Report Says

Median contribution came in at more than $3,000

Teaneck ranked 183 out of 28,725 zip codes nationally in charitable donations in 2008, a study released Monday by the Chronicle of Philanthropy shows.

Township residents gave an average 5.8 percent of their income to charity, above Bergen County’s 4.6 percent, the study said. Garden State residents gave an average 3.7 percent.

Residents under 20 and between 45-64 years old were most charitable, according to the report.

In Teaneck, the median contribution was $3,568, adding to $53.6 million for the town overall, according to the study. The town’s median income came in at $61,043.

According to the study, areas that are more religious, tend to give more. Donors in southern states gave roughly 5.2 percent of their discretionary income to charity—both to religious and to secular groups—compared with donors in the Northeast, who gave 4.1 percent, the report shows.

Utah was the most generous state while New Hampshire had the lowest rank for giving.
