9/11 Remembrance Ceremony Set At Ocean County Offices
Ocean County will honor those from the county who were among the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Ocean County Board of Commissioners will hold its annual Day of Remembrance ceremony on Wednesday to honor those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
The ceremony will be held at the Sept. 11 Memorial in the courtyard of the county's offices at 119 Hooper Ave., Toms River. It begins at 8:30 a.m.
There were 21 Ocean County residents among the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks at the World Trade Center in New York, at the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and on United Flight 93 that was crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

"Countless others have died as a result of Sept. 11 illnesses," county officials said. "We also remember the men and women of the military that were lost during the War on Terror and continue to fight to keep us safe."
There will be a wreath-laying at the county's Sept. 11 memorial and a moment of silence, along with speeches.

At the World Trade Center, 2,763 died, including 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers, according to History.com. At the Pentagon, 189 people were killed, including 64 on American Airlines Flight 77, the airliner that struck the building. On United Flight 93, 44 people died when the passengers who realized the plane had been hijacked plane caused the plane to crash in Pennsylvania before it could reach its intended target.
