Manchester Woman, 81, Crashes Into Toms River Building

Woman pressed accelerator rather than brake, police say

A Manchester woman crashed her car into a building in Toms River on Saturday morning, causing significant damage.

According to police spokesman Ralph Stocco, Eileen McCarthy, 81, from Hickory Street in Manchester, was parking her 1999 Mercury when she stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.  In an attempt to avoid striking the building she swerved right and went over the curb, but was unable to regain control of the car and ultimately struck the front wall of the Taff and Davies Law Office located at 147 Route 70, Stocco said.

Extensive damage was done to the structure however McCarthy did not suffer any injuries, according to Stocco.

McCarthy was issued a summons for careless driving pending a court date.
