Swimmer Dies After Being Pulled From Ocean At Jersey Shore, Police Say

The North Jersey resident was found in the water off Lavallette, police said. Lifeguards are not on duty at most beaches at the shore.

LAVALLETTE, NJ — A 39-year-old North Jersey man has died after being pulled from the ocean in Lavallette on Tuesday, Lavallette police confirmed.

The man, a Totowa resident, was found partially submerged in the ocean about 25 yards from shore off the New York Avenue beach after authorities received a call reporting a swimmer in distress at 11:43 a.m., Police Chief Christian LaCicero said.

There were no lifeguards on duty in Lavallette, which is like most towns at the Jersey Shore and does not staff the beaches with lifeguards after Labor Day.

Rescue swimmers from Lavallette and Seaside Heights went in and pulled the man from the water, and resuscitation efforts began immediately, LaCicero said.

The man was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where he was pronounced dead, LaCicero said.

Lavallette was assisted by Seaside Heights police, Toms River police, the Seaside Heights and Seaside Park fire departments, Tri-Boro First Aid, RWJ Barnabas paramedics and the Seaside Heights Beach Patrol, LaCicero said.
