Snapchat Threat To School Prompts Police Presence In Beachwood

Authorities were continuing to try to identify the person who made the threat.

BEACHWOOD, NJ — An increased police presence will remain in place at Toms River Intermediate South on Wednesday following a threat made over Snapchat to the school. That threat has been deemed not credible, authorities said Wednesday.

Beachwood police said in a Facebook post at 11:22 p.m. Tuesday that they were aware of the threat, which had been made by a male in a large Snapchat message group of students and that multiple law enforcement agencies were investigating.

In an update just before 8 a.m., Beachwood police said investigators from the the South Toms River and Beachwood police departments along with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office worked through the evening and early morning hours and have determined the threat was not credible.

"It is believed to have originated from an individual that resides in the State of Florida and is still under investigation at this time," Beachwood police said.

The threat, which Beachwood police did not detail, was made earlier in the day on Tuesday.

"The safety of the students and staff at all our schools is paramount to our department and you will see a heavier police presence than normal at the school tomorrow throughout the day," Beachwood police wrote in their initial post.

The increased police presence will remain out of an abundance of caution, police said.
