Toms River Hockey Club Raising Funds For Cancer Research

TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Toms River Hockey Club is putting its goaltenders on the line as it again raises money for the October Saves fundraiser.

October Saves got its start in 2014 to raise money within the youth hockey world to fight cancer, with hockey goaltenders of all ages across North America gathering donations and pledges for each save they make during the month of October.

The funds raised benefit several cancer-fighting organizations in the United States and Canada.

The Toms River Hockey Club's goaltenders have been participating for several seasons and the kids, from 10U through 18U, have increased their totals each year. In 2022, the goaltenders raised $7,346 and in 2023 the total reached $10,575.40.

So far in the 2024 campaign, the goaltenders have raised more than $9,400, club president Harry McDermott said.

In addition to the efforts of the goaltenders, the club is supplementing the fundraising with its own October Saves-themed merchandise, the proceeds from which are being donated to October Saves.

The club is accepting October Saves donations at various Blackhawks' home games at Winding River Skating Center throughout October, including at their 6th Annual Trunk-or-Treat on Oct. 29, McDermott said.
