2 Ice Fishermen Found Dead In North Jersey Reservoir

Two holes were observed in the ice approximately 100 yards from shore with the mens' belongings, authorities said.

MORRIS COUNTY - The bodies of two ice fishermen from Passaic County were recovered over the weekend at Split Rock Reservoir, authorities said.

A 76-year-old from Passaic and a 64-year-old from Clifton were reported missing to Butler police on Dec. 31 at around 2 p.m. after neither returned from an ice fishing trip at the Kinnelon reservoir the day prior, Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll said in a statement.

The personal belongings of the men were observed on the shoreline and two holes were observed in the ice around 100 yards from shore, Carroll said.

An ice rescue team recovered one of the bodies Saturday; the body of the second man was found Sunday afternoon, Carroll added.

The investigation was conducted by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, Kinnelon Fire Department, Bloomingdale Fire Department, Montville Fire Department, Boonton Township Fire Department, Parsippany Rescue and Recovery Unit and Tri-Boro First Aid Squad.
