Kinnelon Could Get Its Own Zip Code Through Federal Legislation

Sharing Butler's zip code causes postal delays, misdelivered items and potential confusion for first responders, Rep. Mikie Sherrill says.

KINNELON, NJ — Despite occupying nearly 20 square miles, Kinnelon doesn't have its own zip code. That could change through federal legislation.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill introduced a bill to establish a unique zip code for Kinnelon, which shares the zip code of 07405 with Butler. The arrangement causes postal delays, misdelivered items and potential confusion for first responders, Sherrill says.

“Kinnelon residents and elected officials have urged the Postal Service to designate a unique ZIP Code for their town for years to no avail through traditional processes,” Sherrill said. “It was time to pursue a different solution to this problem through legislation."

Sherrill introduced the bill Dec. 8 in the House of Representatives, which referred it to the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. Six New Jersey congress members cosponsored the bill — Reps. Donald Norcross, Josh Gottheimer, Albio Sires, Bill Pascrell, Donald M. Payne and Bonnie Watson Coleman.

Kinnelon Mayor Jim Freda thanked Sherrill for pursuing the cause of getting the borough its own zip code.
