3 Communications HS Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

The three students are competing for National Merit Scholarships, which will be awarded next year.

WALL, NJ – Three seniors at Communications High School were recently named as semifinalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The three students, Kylie Fuerbacher, Liam Stemetzki, and Beatrice Zaleski are part of a group of 16,000 semifinalists who will compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes information about the semi-finalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, employment, and also any honors or awards received.

A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test to compete for a finalist spot.

“We’re always proud of our student’s accomplishments,” Jim Gleason, principal of Communications High School said to Patch.

“We believe that the students who come here are well prepared and we’re very happy that they have made it to the semifinals of such a prestigious competition.”
