Ahead Of Wall Football Season, Officials Offer Some Ground Rules

Local police, school officials share state and Shore Conference guidelines for spectators at football games.

WALL, NJ — The Wall police chief and school superintendent say they are welcoming the community back to school athletic events, including to Friday night's varsity home game against neighboring Howell.

But they also want everyone to know they and the athletic conferences take good behavior among fans seriously.

Behavior such as taunting, negative cheering, or confrontation with referees, opposing players, coaches, and parents could get a spectator removed from the stadium, guidelines say.

Chief Sean O'Halloran and Superintendent Tracy R. Handerhan distributed a letter to remind spectators of some ground rules for attending games.

The first home varsity football game against Howell High School was scheduled for Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.

"Wall Township Police Department looks forward to working with the Wall High School in promoting youth sports and activities to encourage sportsmanship and leadership to help shape the future," O'Halloran said.

But he also noted that the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) and the Shore Conference leadership asked the town to remind visitors of the following at the start of the fall season:

  • Spectator signs or banners will not be permitted on or around the stadium, any field, or gymnasium.
  • Spectators who arrive at the gate with a sign or banner will be refused admission.
  • Noise makers, whistles, air-horns, or radios will not be permitted in the stadium area.
  • No possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages.
  • No smoking or vaping on school grounds.
  • No use, possession, or distribution of drugs or illegal substances.
  • No pets.
  • Bags are not permitted in the stadium area.
  • Anyone who leaves the stadium area will not be permitted to return for that game.
  • All spectators must be seated in the appropriate section designated by the site manager.
  • No spectators are allowed near the team benches or in the end zones.
  • Visiting team spectators should sit in the bleachers farthest from the high school (easterly).
  • Any spectator showing an outward display of poor sportsmanship which could possibly lead to a disturbance will be removed from the campus or the Wall Police Department may be called for a resolution. This includes taunting, negative cheering, or confrontation with referees, opposing players, coaches, and parents.
  • Spectators must comply with requests made by site managers, athletic directors, game officials, medical personnel, security/police, league officials, and school administration.
  • Spectators are asked to demonstrate leadership at critical times. The playing of the National Anthem, tending to injured participants, navigating stressful game situations, and negotiating dangerous circumstances (such as lighting) are examples of such critical times.

For future Wall games, ticket prices are $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available onsite at Wall Stadium, 1630 18th Ave., Wall, or online for purchase.
