Asbury Park Man Had Stolen Handgun, Knives, Wall Police Say

A traffic stop on Route 35 in Wall led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Asbury Park man on weapons and narcotics charges, according to police.

WALL, NJ — Following a traffic stop on Route 35, a 20-year-old Asbury Park man was arrested Friday afternoon for multiple offenses, including possession of a stolen handgun, Wall police said.

On Friday, March 8, at approximately 3:45 p.m., members of the Wall Township Police Department Quality of Life Unit pulled over Corey E. Thermitus, 20 of Asbury Park, who was driving a 2015 Hyundai Sonata north on Route 35, according to police.

The investigation conducted by detectives on the scene led to the arrest of Thermitus, who was charged with the following, according to police:

  • Unlawful possession of a firearm (Taurus 9mm)
  • Possession of a defaced firearm
  • Possession of a stolen firearm
  • Possession of a firearm while committing a drug offense
  • Possession of hollow point ammunition
  • Possession of a high-capacity magazine
  • Possession of stolen property
  • Receiving stolen property
  • Possession of burglary tools (sledgehammer and ski mask)
  • Possession of a weapon (two knives)
  • Possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.

Thermitus was taken to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold, pending a
court appearance in Monmouth County Superior Court, police said.

Sgt. Michael Tancredi, Detective Thomas Gavaghan and Patrolman Ken Bala were the arresting officers.
