Canadian Woman Meets Wall Cops, Not Victim, In Bail Scam Attempt
Wall resident got a phony call that their grandson needed $10,000 in bail money. Wall police intercepted the money pick-up, charged suspect.
WALL, NJ —Wall police arrested a woman from Canada on Thursday when she tried to pick up money from a Wall resident in a bail scam.
Shenaaya Hackett, 19, of Montreal, Canada, was charged with third-degree theft by deception in the scam, police said.
At approximately 2:15 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, the Wall Police Department went to the Manasquan Park section of the township after a resident reported they received a phone call claiming their grandson had been arrested and needed to pay $10,000 to be released from custody, police said.

These so-called "bail scams" are common and authorities frequently warn the public about them.
The caller told the resident that they would send someone to pick up the money for the supposed "bail," according to a police report.

So patrol officers and detectives set up a meeting location for the caller to pick up the money, at which time Hackett encountered the officers - not the intended scam victim, police said.
Hackett was arrested and transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Facility in Freehold, police said.
The incident was investigated by Wall officers Patrolman Mark Daugherty and Patrolman Trent Powers.
